Riverbend Restaurant, Richmond Heights - Visited April 2016

Even though my daughter had just taken me out for a birthday lunch, my department at the university decided they should do so as well, so I had to pick a different place for us to go to lunch. I had heard of the Riverbend restaurant moving from Soulard to the vacant space next to Hank's Cheesecakes (since the closure of Harvest) so I decided to select them for lunch. They have a nice parking lot on the side and back, but coming south on Big Bend you have to know to turn right before you reach the building to be traveling the proper direction in their lot. At 11:45am the lot was still pretty empty and we had plenty of spaces for both of our cars full of people.

The restaurant specializes in Cajun and Creole food and they have an assorted menu, both in options and price. One nice option is a "Pick Deux" where you can have half a Po-Boy with a soup, salad or any salad at a reduced price. That sounded like a good idea and a number of people selected different "picks" of Po-Boys and other items. Since it was Thursday they also had a grilled Mahi taco special which both Bob and Robert selected. The dining room was pretty spacious and pleasant and we were seated on a raised level in the back where we could see a number of flat screen HDTV's and also notice the decor. We noticed an official Washington University banner and also a Saint Louis University banner on the wall, but the SLU version had their old logo on it (not the new updated look.) The overall feel of the interior was very nice and it seemed like a good place to hang out and relax.

Our food all arrived together and was properly prepared and dispersed to every one. My Pick Deux was a smoked sausage Po-Boy with the pork and the Cochon and Black-Eyed Pea Gumbo and they were both very good. The Po-Boy had their Creole mayo which has a very good zesty flavor to it and the sausage was meaty and delicious. It did become a bit of a mess to eat but I had no problem finishing it off. Bob and Robert both like their tacos which were flavorful but not too spicy at all. Vicki had a side salad with her Po-Boy and she said it was very good. Margo said her shrimp Po-Boy had lots of large flavorful shrimp and she liked it a lot. It seemed like everybody liked their selections and thought I had made yet another wonderful selection for lunch! (Like I did last year, and also the year before.) They have high expectations for my birthday lunch picks every year so I will have to choose wisely for 2017!
