Today it was my pick to select a lunch spot, so I tried to find someplace unique we had never visited that was not just another chain. It was a cold, rainy morning, so I thought I comfortable, mom and pop diner knd of place would be good, so I decided upon the Boardwalk Cafe at Lockwood and Big Bend in Webster Groves. I had recently read it was selected as one of the five best breakfast places in St. Louis, and since it was so close to home we had to try it out. It appears they used to have a website with a menu, but that is no longer online, but we knew they had breakfast food, hamburgers, sandwiches and that sounded good enough for us.
We parked in the Old Orchard parking lot where the spots seemed a little narrow, but luckily we were driving a smaller car. We did appreciate the awning around the shopping center on this rainy day, as we were able to dash quickly to it from our car, and then walk under the overhang around to the restaurant on the side. Upon entering we did notice it was rather small (as expected) and we were seated at a booth for four in the middle of the dining area where there was a table for two abutted right next to us (occupied by a couple finishing up their meal.) That was a strange arrangement, but luckily the couple finished eating in just a few minutes and they left the restaurant and nobody else was seated next to us.
We were able to peruse the menu for awhile which had a lot of different breakfast options as well as many burger, sandwich and wrap options. They all looked pretty good to me, and the prices were very reasonable as well. I decided upon the Arch Skillet, my son picked the Breakfast Burger (burger with bacon and eggs), my wife selected a plain burger, and my mother-in-law selected the pancakes, bacon and eggs combination. While we waited we noticed the place was quite busy and a steady stream of people kept coming and going. When we received our drinks they all came in large, generous glasses, but the straws that came with them were too short! We kept finding our straws dropping over the end and trying to sink into the beverages. They were "bendy straws", but even bending them did not keep them from slipping into the deep glasses.
The food arrived fairly quickly and they were very generous with their portions. The burgers were wide and flat (the way my son likes them) and they both enjoyed them very much. My wife thought it was good, but she still prefers the burgers at Five Star or Dave & Tony's. There was something about her patty that reminded her of a Wendy's burger, but she could not quite verbalize it. My son noticed the patty was rather dry and not as juicy as some of the thicker patties at other places. My Arch Skillet was very good with plenty of jalapenos giving it a lot of flavor, along with generous chunks of sausage, green peppers and onions. I thought it was very well put together and made a very fine meal. My mother-in-law enjoyed her pancake combination, but we did notice they just served Mrs. Butterworth syrup and little prepackaged pieces of butter. Hey, it is hard to complain with their low prices and generous portions!
All in all it was a good, enjoyable meal, but we were not convinced it was necessarily one of the five best breakfast places in St. Louis. It was still a good place for a meal, and a great value.
