Oishi Sushi, Creve Coeur - Visited January 2017

Since it was my eldest child's selection for lunch for the day, I was not surprised the selection was a sushi place, but the pick was not the usual Sushi Station in Webster, but Oishi Sushi in Creve Coeur instead which we had last visited over a year ago. The first thing we noticed is that it does not open until noon, since we arrived about 11:40am, so we waited in our minivan for a little while before going into the restaurant. When we did enter there were already a couple parties there, and we were seated on the right side at a table for six. Three of us decided we would order six rolls to share which included a pickled radish roll, a spicy salmon roll, a Philadelphia roll, a shrimp tempura roll, an eel avocado roll and a golden dragon roll. My wife and mother-in-law ordered two tempura combinations, one shrimp and one vegetable which came with miso soup and Japanese salad, and the rest of us had soup and salad too. We added an order of crab rangoons as appetizers to help celebrate Chinese New Year too! The crab rangoons were fresh and hearty and made a good opener. The miso soup and salad were pretty standard fare, but still pretty good as we awaited our main courses.

When the rolls arrived, we were excited to see the sushi came on a large boat platter which really made it look festive. Who can resist a boat full of sushi rolls? As noted before the rolls at Oishi Sushi are actually fairly well sized, especially the specialties which have plenty of meat and other ingredients rolled in with the rice. The meats all tasted very fresh and were very flavorful. From the photos you can see the size of the radish roll which is pretty standard size, and you can tell how much "stuff" they put in the specialty rolls. Some of them were indeed a mouthful!

I actually was able to sample some of the vegetable tempura and it was pretty good too, but not as tasty as the sushi. The service was also pretty good with an attentive and cheerful server who wanted to speak to me in Chinese, but unfortunately I only know one Chinese phrase that is not something you eat. (I had learned "Happy New Year" earlier this month, but I forgot it about 15 minutes after first learning it.)

The menu is very large but a bit confusing and some of the prices are taped over so it is difficult to figure out what everything will cost. We were a bit confused over the tempura lunch entrees and would probably have preferred two of the shrimp tempura entrees (which included some vegetables) and would not have ordered the entree that was all vegetables.

Overall we enjoyed another delicious and festive meal at Oishi Sushi and look forward to visiting again.
