Hi-Pointe Drive In - Visited January 2017

Today after church we decided to go out somewhere for lunch. Yesterday we had tried to visit the new Hi-Pointe Drive In on McCausland, but the line was too long so we ended up at The Shack in Frontenac instead. We decided to try the Hi-Pointe Drive In again today, and today the line was even longer! So we decided we would order it to go and take it home since the tiny former Del Taco space was completely packed again. The line snaked through the dining area and the place is much too small for the crowd that it draws. They are pretty efficient with such a busy business, but it still took us a while as we waited for them to make the butterscotch milkshake one of us had ordered.

They threw all the burgers, sandwiches and fries in a single bag, and when we opened them at home they did get a bit smashed. The burgers we saw being delivered in the dining area definitely appeared nicer than the ones we unwrapped, but at least we had a roomy table at home where we could eat! My son and I both ordered the Taco burger which was very flavorful, despite being a bit messy. My wife ordered the turkey club sandwich which was loaded with a generous amount of very well smoked, shredded turkey which I was able to sample. It was moist and delicious. My eldest also ordered a burger and enjoyed it reasonably well. The fries started out okay but quickly became a big soggy and underwhelming. They probably would have been better fresher and with the spicy mayonnaise which we did not receive in our take out bag.

The burgers were reminiscent of a Steak 'n' Shake steakburger, but with a little more meat and juicier and greasier. They are definitely a step up from a fast food burger, but not the same level as a high end burger restaurant (Five Star or Dave & Tony's).  The butterscotch shake was just "mediocre" and the ingredients were not mixed in very thoroughly. The service is actually pretty good considering the incredible high throughput of their operation, but the place is just too crowded and busy to create any type of pleasant dining experience. I cannot imagine being able to just unwind and enjoy your meal since you would always feel you have to eat as fast as possible and leave so the next group waiting for a table can sit down and consume their meal at top speed as well. Perhaps after they are not so "new" in a few months they will not be so packed and busy, but since their food is actually fairly decent and they are in a fantastic location, I bet they will always be that crowded.
