Three Kings Public House, Delmar Loop - Visited September 2016

Today it was my pick for Saturday lunch and I tried to think of some place new to go, but instead decided someplace I had been to for the first time just a couple months ago, The Three Kings on the Delmar Loop. I had remembered they had a lot of interesting looking items on their menu, and I thought I might try their Dirty Bastard Bratzel, just because it sounded like something fun to order.

This time instead of parking in the lot across the street, we parked in the garage on the north side of Delmar which was still pretty empty. The hardest part there was trying to find enough change to press into the meters and then to make sure the coins were in far enough to allow us to spin the knob and be credited for the time. It was like playing a slot machine at a casino! We had enough change to push our time up to two hours which should be plenty of time.

It was a nice day and many people were sitting outside, but we decided to sit in a booth inside where it was a bit chilly. The table was also somewhat small for the four of us, so we asked to clear off the appetizer plates to make more room. The service was prompt and quite courteous and they cleared off the table for us. They had bottles of chilled water on the table which my son and I chose as our beverage and also took drink orders for my mother-in-law and wife who both ordered tea. There was no sweetener on the table but our server brought some over with my wife's tea.

As our server came over to take our orders, he told us about the daily specials. Once again, I changed my mind and decided to go with the tuna tacos he recommended, which sounded pretty tasty. My son ordered the Three Kings burger with fries, my mother-in-law ordered the grilled cheese with the tomato bisque and my wife ordered the turkey club and a side salad with thousand island dressing. We were able to substitute cheeses on the grilled cheese and the turkey club to get the orders to everyone's liking.

My wife's salad came first and it was a nice mixture of greens and other fixings with the dressing evenly and lightly distributed. She thought is was a good salad. Our entrees arrived shortly afterwards and they were all prepared precisely as we ordered them. My son liked his burger quite well, comparing it to the Five Star Blue Ribbon burger, although the patty was perhaps not quite as good.
My mother-in-law enjoyed her grilled cheese but for some reason thought her tomato bisque was flavored hot (my son tried it and did not think so.)  My wife liked her club sandwich where the melted cheese, mayo and avocado blended together well to flavor the turkey and bacon very well (much better than the awful turkey club she experienced at Fitz's up the street about a year ago.) My tuna tacos were also very good, with the tuna lightly grilled with a flavorful seasoning that blended very well with the pico de gallo and vegetables they added in the tortillas. Since the tacos were not overly large, I was also able to sample my wife's sandwich and some of my son's fries which were also pretty good for pub fries. We all agreed that the food quality was above your typical bar fare and we all would come back again.

The service from both our server and the other wait staff was very responsive, and the background music was actually pretty lively and enjoyable, bringing up discussions of who was going to get up and dance a number of different times. My wife also tested out the ladies' restroom and said it was in pretty good shape for one in an older Loop establishment. All in all it was a pretty good lunch in a nice atmosphere which left all of us pretty happy.

Food quality, atmosphere and service

One follow-up note is that afterwards my wife had to made a couple quick "runs" to the facilities at home, so her stomach did not agree with something she ate there. We suspect it must be the salad since I also ate the sandwich and I had no issues.
