Today was again my daughter's pick for lunch and she continues to pick more interesting places (hurray, it is not just me!) This Saturday she selected Wei Hong Bakery & Restaurant on 3175 South Grand. Again, this is not a "mid-county" restaurant, but a mid-town one, but since Grand is so convenient to both highway 40 and 44 it is still a pretty quick trip from mid-county (even with the never ending highway construction.) Plus we had heard good things about Wei Hong and we were excited to visit it (okay, everyone was except my son!)
My daughter had visited just a few weeks ago so we let her order and we ordered family style. We started out with some Crab Rangoons (so my son could not starve), the BBQ combo plate, the Chicken Lo Mein, the Dry Beef Chow Fun and the Shrimp with Walnuts. The place was pretty empty when we arrived and the only other people there were two little children watching the Disney Channel on the lone HDTV until the Missouri - Georgia football game began (Mizzou won, wow!) The server actually spoke very good English with not much of an accent and was also quite attentive, not all that common in most typical Chinese restaurants.
We received our crab rangoon order just several minutes after ordering with the BBQ combo platter just a few minutes later. The crab rangoons were obviously just freshly cooked and tasted very good, with a generous little cup full of sweet and sour sauce served with them. They were quite excellent. The BBQ combo platter, had very fatty pork chunks on it, the duck hardly had any meat on it and the chicken was from a leg, so it also had little edible meat. I ended up eating most of that (so I am not sure if that is a positive or a negative!)
The lo mein used thinner rice noodles and it was very flavorful, with a good combination of vegetables and chicken and sauce. It was much more flavorful than most lo mein dishes you find at other Chinese restaurants. The Dry Beef Chow Fun was also very flavorful without being too strong, with the noodles being hearty and tasty without being overly flavored either. We all enjoyed the Beef Chow Fat, even my picky son (who also liked the Lo Mein.) The Shrimp with Walnuts added a nice sweetness to our selections and served with brocolli added some more vegetables as well. These three entrees were all very well prepared, freshly cooked and complemented each other nicely. All of us left full and satisfied, with even some leftovers to take home for another day. Who could ask for anything more? Now I want to visit their larger Wei Hong Seafood Restaurant on Olive in U. City which is supposed to have good Dim Sum. I know our department ordered delivery from them before and were not impressed, but that is completely different from visiting them for Dim Sum at the restaurant. That will have to be another day!
