Yummi Tummi, Maplewood - Visited May 2019

It was my Saturday to select a lunch spot, so I thought I would peruse my blog and look for some place we had gone before that my mother-in-law could stand on a warm, sunny noontime. I found my two year old review for Toasty Subs in Maplewood and thought I had a winner. Then when I looked up "Toasty Subs" online I realized they had changed their name to "Yummi Tummi" so now I had to go! How could you not go to some place with the name "Yummi Tummi"? Plus it had its own convenient parking lot and I remember it had a reasonably roomy and comfortable dining area. After initally heading the wrong direction on Big Bend (it is located south of Manchester, but north of Deer Creek Plaza), we found a nearby parking spot so we could go inside and try their expanded menu.

Along with the toasted sandwiches, sushi and bubble tea they had before, they have added ramen and poke bowls to their lineup. Since I spotted a "spicy ramen and beef" special listed, I had to try it since I love spicy, beef and ramen (a perfect trifecta) and I always love a daily special too. My very particular mother-in-law was able to order a simple ham and cheese sandwich, my wife ordered a turkey club sandwich and my two adult offspring ordered the sushi combo special (two rolls with edamame), and the tonkotsu ramen plus an extra dragon roll on the side.

We could not find a table for five that was not the large elevated table, but it was easy enough to move one of the tables for two with a table for four so we could all comfortably sit together. There were only a few other groups in the dining area so it was not too noisy and fairly clean and comfortable. There were now a couple other staff members there besides the one lady (who I believe is one of the owners) so the restaurant was better staffed. We self-served our beverages and it did not take very long for our food to arrive. First came the sandwiches, hot and freshly toasted along with some origial Sun Chips (which are no longer stocked at Subways anymore.) Then came the sushi plates and then the ramen. It was fun to see the sushi roll combo came in a large boat (pictured above) and the dragon roll was very decoratively made as well.

The ramen bowls were generously proportioned and came with both chopsticks and one of those funny Chinese soup spoons. I never understood why they had to be shaped that way, but I still used it. My spicy ramen had a nice flavor to its broth and plenty of slices of lean, flavorful beef.

The ramen noodles were hearty and well cooked (not overcooked and mushy) and the egg was perfoectly cooked as well. There were other vegetables in there as well, and it made a very nice meal, along with the shared sushi rolls so I was stuffed by the end. The sushi tasted as good as it looked with fresh tasting fish and avocados and enough sauce to give it a nice flavor.

I also tried the sandwich and will have to say it was pretty good for a toasted sub sandwich, and my wife agreed as well. My picky mother-in-law actually ate a reasonable portion of hers so it could not have been too bad, even if she did eat it like corn on the cob.

The owner/chef lady came by after we were finished and asked how everything was. We had to agree it was pretty good for a place that still looked with an old fast food restaurant outside. Overall, we were all impressed with our second visit to Yummi Tummi and have to say they are doing a good job with their expanded menu and new name. Where else can you get quality drive-thru sandwiches, sushi and ramen?
