Break-N-Egg Diner, Clayton - Visited April 2017

It was my pick for Saturday lunch and I was trying to select a fun new Thai place to eat that was not one of the same ones on the Delmar Loop. My first selection was Tei Too in Old Orchard Webster but that one did not open until noon and we wanted to eat earlier, so I thought I would use the all powerful Internet to find a well regarded Thai restaurant that opened at 11:00 or 11:30. I appeared to find an answer with the Blue Elephant Royal Thai on Forsyth in Clayton. I checked their Facebook page and it said they opened at 11:00am on Saturdays. Perfect!

After parking behind the building in the lot we walked up the alleyway to the Blue Elephant to have some tasty Thai food. Unfortunately the sign on their door said they opened at 12:00 noon and we were standing there before 11:30am. So much for their Facebook page. However, it was a chilly Saturday and we were a bit hungry and we noticed right next door to them was the Break-N-Egg Diner. It was definitely open so we decided to just go there since we had never been there before. Since we were a group of five they were going to seat us at a larger round table in the back. However, they had the back door wide open to help keep the kitchen cooler so it was frigid back there. Instead we decided to sit at a table closer to the counter which was not as drafty but still a little chilly with the back door open.

Their menu is pretty standard diner fare, nothing too fancy. After perusing it, I had decided on the Fiesta skillet which was not so suprisingly exactly what my son was going to order too! Instead he decided to switch to the Chef's Skillet so he could try both. My eldest child ordered some chocolate chip pancakes, my wife ordered eggs, toast and sausage, and my mother-in-law ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. All the food was reasonably good, but nothing out of the ordinary - just as you would expect from a diner. The service was very good with our drinks being refilled regularly, and our waitress was very friendly, even mentioning how good the Thai restaurant was next door. After a while another group was seated further back in the dining area, so they ended up closing the back door and opening up the front door instead. So then we were getting cold drafts from the front of the diner with some flies added for ambience!

Overall it was a pretty nondescript diner experience, but at least the place was open at 11:30am and they kept the hot coffee flowing.

Yup, it's a diner!
