Today was my son's last Saturday lunch pick before he ships off to college, and he decided to select one of his favorite burger places in the St. Louis area, Five Star Burgers in Clayton. Before going there I had to check what their burger of the month was, and it was thhe "Country Ham-mer", two patties of beef with ham between them and grilled grits in cheese. Here is the full description and picture from their Facebook page:
That sounded pretty good to me, so that is what I decided to try out. My son had a burger with bacon, gorgonzola cheese and grilled onions, my wife ordered a plain burger with gorgonzola cheese and my mother-in-law picked their special grilled cheese sandwich. I also ordered onion rings on the side and my son ordered some fries, since we all know he will not eat any french fries once he gets to college!
We were seated on the elevated area near the back, which almost seems like it could be a stage. The seats were hard, and it was pretty dark, but we knew what the ambiance was like before coming. Since we knew they did not have good soft drink choices my son and I stuck to just water, whereas my wife and mothher-in-law selected iced tea.
The food arrived in a timely manner and the food was fantastic as always. I enjoyed the Country Ham-mer with the ham and cheese grilled grits adding a nice flavor in the middle between the two beef patties. The "Bacon Aioli" sauce that came with the burger was pretty mild and not all that flavorful and I used it more to dip my perfectly prepared onion rings than to accent my burger. Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, including my mother-in-law who thoroughly enjoyed the sourdough bread used for her grilled cheese.
My wife tested out their restrooms, and reported they were roomy, and reasonably clean. We have tried a lot of okay to great burger places here in St. Louis, and the Clayton Five Star Burger is always on the top of our list. Soon we will be trying all the midtown burger places if my son will let us visit. I am guessing after a few weeks of the same old campus food selections he will not mind seeing his family if it means a tasty Saturday burger lunch!
