It was time for one of our regular departmental birthday lunches, and luckily it was Margo who likes to go different places. This time she decided on Fitz's on the Delmar Loop. We knew they were doing construction on Delmar for the trolley, so one car went via Skinker and one via Big Bend to see who would get there first and could grab a table. I was in the car headed via Big Bend, and as we approached Leland from the west we saw the rest of our group in other car turn the corner and head towards the parking lots. We were right behind them, but they nabbed a spot right behind Fitz's and we had to park in a further lot west of Leland. So it looks like right now it is just a little faster to go westbound from Skinker!
We had to wait several minutes to be seated since the place was packed as usual, and we were seated on the main floor by a window. There were a lot of groups with children and the place was bustling with activity. Most of us ordered root beer on draft although I decided to go with orange soda which was quite thirst quenching, and always fun to drink out of the big frosted mugs.
It took me a while to decide, and I finally settled on the brisket sandwich. I remember Bob ordered the fish and chips, Robert ordered the Firecracker salad and two of the ladies split the pulled pork sandwich. When the food arrived, I noticed that a reasonable amount of fries came with my brisket sandwich, but Bob was given a huge mound of them. It looks like they are nto consistent on how many they dole out with each order! My brisket sandwich was good, but a little on the dry side and it could have used more sauce. Robert seemed to enjoy his Firecracker salad which had a good amount of chicken but huge portions of lettuce (which he left a good portion behind.) Bob liked his fish but he could not eat his huge mound of fries, so I helped him eat a few.
All in all the meal was pretty good but nothing exceptional. Fitz's has a reasonable menu and prepares consistently decent food, but the root beer and soda are the true standouts. The atmosphere is always lively and family friendly with a lot of groups and visitors and it is usually a "fun" place to go if the food is not so exciting.
