The
Whittemore House on the
Washington University campus just opened up for business today, April 8, and
our department visited there for lunch! Since this is the very first day they were open since their renovation we were able to look around and see what they did. We were happy to see that they remover some walls to make the dining area more open... but what in the world did they do to the woodwork? It had been rather dark before, but they painted all the old woodwork this weird light green color to make it look "brighter" and "more contemporary". I think we all thought that was a bad idea! I noticed an older Biology department faculty member come in to eat and her waiter asked her if she liked the renovation, and she looked around, shook her head and said, "no!" He then tried to explain to her how much better it was now.

But now onto the food. They already had some hard flatbread on the table when we sat down and it was quite tasty and had a little spiciness to it. We looked over the
lunch menu and I ordered the Mediterranean Pulled Lamb sandwich since it sounded interesting. Other folks with me ordered: Chicken, Brie and Cranberry Salad, Chipotle Pork and Chorizo Taco, Chicken Salad Plate, Crispy Duck with Udon Noodles, and Missouri Trout Almandine. I may have missed a couple of people, but everyone seemed to like the food selections they made. I know my sandwich was very tall and a bit messy to eat, but the veal had a nice mild flavor and the yogurt based sauce they used on it added just enough flavor. I thought it was pretty good. As usual the service was very attentive as it always is. And even though we were not overly impressed with the color scheme and the fact they painted over all the original woodwork, it still had a very nice ambiance for our departmental lunch. It is still definitely the nicest place to eat on campus.
