Unimpressive building, but good pizza! |
It was New Year's Eve 2012 and we were looking for some place unique to go for lunch, and someone had suggested going to
La Pizza on Delmar. We were a group of eight which is large for that tiny restaurant, but since we were guessing few people would be there for lunch New Year's Eve we would take our chances. Luckily, when we arrived the sitting area was empty (as it often is when we visit) so we were able to push two tables together to accommodate our group. We noticed the "regular guys" were not there on that Monday for lunch (as are usually there on the weekends) so we were hoping the pizza would still be just as good.

This is the usual pizza making guy, but he was not there on this visit! |
Since we were hosting relatives, we let everyone else select drinks out of the "drink fridge" and then realized why we again missed the soda fountain they used to have there at La Pizza. Myself, I usually order water everywhere I go, but I opted for a Fitz's orange soda since it was one of the few drinks left after the relatives and our kids had emptied some other choice drinks. That fridge is not very large and it does not keep the drinks very cold, which makes dining in there not so pleasant. I understand they do not have a huge eat-in crowd, so their soda fountain may not have made them much if any money, but we are not overly impressed with their tiny drink fridge.
But what we are always impressed with at La Pizza is... the New York style pizza! That day we ordered two pies, one that was half cheese, half ham and pineapple, and another that was half pepperoni/bacon and half green peppers/mushrooms. Some of us also ordered salads which are always very basic, but pretty good, probably because of the quality greens, chopped tomatoes, a good packaged dressing (except for their house Italian which I do not care for) and topped with plenty of thick strings of provel cheese (or is it mozzarella?) The pizzas came out piping hot of the oven and straight to our tables as usual, smelling heavenly and ready to be devoured. My niece who never says much did not have to speak a word, as she ate two whole slices which is a lot for her, and a sign of definite approval. The out of town guests were quite impressed with the place and did appreciate the small "homey" feel to it, much as we always do.
